There are many epic rivalries within the wireless industry: Apple vs Samsung, iOS vs Android, Angry Birds vs Fruit Ninja... OK, that last one may not be that epic, but you get the idea. Actually, another very interesting rivalry we can think of right now is LCD vs AMOLED.

Having been relying on and perfecting it, Samsung is easily the biggest proponent of AMOLED screen technology, and we can certainly understand the Korean manufacturer for sticking with it. Although it does have a number of disadvantages, it cannot be denied that AMOLED is eye-catchy. With its lush and vibrant colors, as well as striking contrast levels, thanks to the perfect black color, AMOLED screens look quite impressive when viewing colorful photos or video. However, this is where we have to acknowledge the fact that as fancy as they look, AMOLED displays are still suffering from a lack of brightness and exhibit color imbalances that make them look weird at times. Not that you can't get used to it, but once you compare an AMOLED screen to a quality LCD one, the cons of Samsung's technology of choice become quite apparent.

As luck would have it, we've witnessed the launch of a number of hot smartphones recently, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Apple iPhone 5s, which happen to be the benchmark devices for both screen technologies – AMOLED and LCD. How Upstart Xiaomi Rattled China's Smartphone Race

At the raucous September release event for Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Inc.'s latest device, fans with glow sticks and company shirts shouted loudest when founder Lei Jun announced its price.

At 1,999 yuan ($326), its Mi3 handset sells for roughly half the price as Apple Inc.'s AAPL +0.98% new budget iPhone 5C. It is priced similarly lower to devices with comparable specs made by heavyweights such as Samsung Electronics Co.

The discount pricing has helped fuel Xiaomi's torrid growth in the world's largest smartphone market. In the three years since Mr. Lei founded the company, Xiaomi has captured 5% of China's smartphone market as of the second quarter of 2013, overtaking Apple's share in the country, according to research group Canalys.

Xiaomi intends to sell 20 million handsets for this year, after selling roughly seven million last year, according to the company.

"We use an Internet thought process," the 43-year-old Mr. Lei said in an interview. "On the Internet the best products—the products used most frequently—are all free. Email is free, most content is free."

"It's through a free model that you can most quickly attract users," he added. "So we try to sell our products as close to the cost of materials as possible."

Xiaomi—the name means "millet" in Chinese and is pronounced similar to "sheow-me" in English—is worth $10 billion, based on its most recent round of fundraising. Revenue last year totaled about 12.65 billion yuan ($2.07 billion). Its profile was further burnished last week when China President Xi Jinping included Mr. Lei in a meeting with other technology executives during a tech-themed Politburo event.

Rumor: Lenovo Plans Acquisition of HTC, Completed in First Half of 2014

According to Apple Daily in Taiwan, Lenovo met HTC in Aug this year to discuss about cooperation realized by joint venture or stock-for-stock, but brand of HTC still remained. And that cooperation solution would be completed in the first half of 2014.

Lenovo ranks No.4 in smartphone market share with 4.74% in globe, and ranks No.2 with 12%, lower than Samsung and Apple. Actually HTC president said that HTC gonna would reach 20% of Chinese top smartphone market share in 2014, which may hint the cooperation with Lenovo.

HTC's Wang blames lack of communication for sales slump

HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang says that communication between the company and consumers needs to improve. Over the weekend, Wang told a television audience during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in Bali that "We really have the best technology and the best product." The Taiwan based manufacturer saw its global share of the smartphone market drop by more than 50% in the second quarter despite offering its best received model in years, the HTC One. While a smaller HTC One mini has already launched, the company is expected to soon unveil the HTC One Max, a phablet sized version of its flagship model with a fingerprint sensor on back.

HTC had hoped that its new ad campaign starring Robert Downey Jr. would give a boost to sales, but the spots really were unfocused and did not necessarily "communicate" with phone buyers. That probably won't stop HTC from trying to use the actor in future spots. Wang says that the public likes Downey because they see him as a "change maker." But HTC is in the business of selling phones, not cute slogans, which leads to a major disconnect between the company's ultimate mission and the commercials. Since the actor is believed to have signed a two-year contract worth $12 million, the manufacturer might feel compelled to continue starring the movie star in more ads.

Upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note tablet may be dual-boot with Android and Windows RT

Last week, we heard a rumor that HTC might be looking into dual-boot devices that run both Android and Windows Phone. The surprising part of the rumor was that it seemed Microsoft may have suggested the idea to HTC as a way to boost Windows Phone visibility. Today, a new rumor has emerged that says Microsoft may not be targeting HTC for this effort, but that the company from Redmond may have also asked Samsung and Huawei to do the same.

The report claims that just as with HTC, Microsoft has offered to waive licensing fees when asking Samsung and Huawei to build dual-boot devices; but, unlike with HTC, Microsoft may have asked the companies to not only build Android/Windows Phone handsets, but tablets as well. Unfortunately, the rumor doesn't say that Microsoft has been asking to get Samsung and Huawei tablets that are dual-boot Android and Windows 8, which consumers might actually want.
